When does the job actually begin?

Here's a great question to ask your staff in your next group meeting / In service,

When do you start work?

  • Is it when you clock in?
  • Is it when you get out of your car?
  • Is it after you've had your coffee and caught up with the gossip
  • Is it when you enter the property?
  • Is it when you begin your drive to work?
  • Is it when you check your email?
  • Is it when you wake up and get in the shower?

There is no right or wrong answer to this question only (much)better answers than others, BUT the important part of this exercise is to ask WHY? to each answer you are given.

You can gain an insight in to how people think about their job and how much planning they may do whether they are required or not.

Pose the question,

If you get out of your car and there is a piece of trash in the parking lot, it is ok to pick it up before you are clocked in?- why/why not?
or
Once you clock out do you have to stay in complete uniform or can you walk to your car with half and half or pull out your tucked in shirt and put your nose/eyebrow/tongue ring back in?- why/why not?

I have always believed that once you enter property you should begin inspecting and planning your day. If you are walking in or out or even on break you represent your organization but the challenge is trying to get everyone in your dept. and others to be consistent.

I also ask this question in an interview with the follow up why? to get an understanding of what someone will do once hired.

I would love to know how you address the issues of how you lead others on what they do and how they look and act when they are on or off the clock.
